Universal Weather And Aviation Careers

Universal Weather And Aviation Careers Begin With Understanding Of METAR.

The key to having a successful career in the aviation industry is understanding how the weather plays a role in daily operations. Current weather conditions are obtained from observers in an Aviation Weather Observation from locations all over the world. These observers may be computers attached to instrumentation or to skilled people of all nationalities residing in every country on the globe. The weather observation is referred to as a: meteorological aviation routine report and it is known by the abbreviation METAR in the weather and aviation communities. The METAR report is provided in an observation model which contains two primary elements. These elements are the body of the report and the remarks section.

The body of the report will contain: the type of report, the station identifier, the date and time of the observation, the report modifier, the wind, the visibility, the runway visual range, present weather code, the sky condition, the temperature and dew point, the altimeter reading at the observation time, and any additional data that is important to the aviation or meteorological community. In the United States this information is contained and further defined in the Federal Meteorological Handbook Number One which is studied by weather observers who must become certified to perform aviation weather observations. An important understanding associated with METAR is that of time.

All aviation weather observations are taken within a specific ten minute period every hour. When performed by trained observers the reading of various instruments begins at ten minutes to the hour for the report to be filed at the top of the hour. To this observation a 24 hour time is attributed known as the Universal Time Coordinate, Greenwich Mean Time GMT, or otherwise known as military time. It is in this way that a segment of weather readings at the same period of time all over the world can be isolated and posted quantitatively for development of weather maps that are used in the aviation and weather communities.
